Florey & Chain

Important in Medicine because…

Two scientists who discovered Fleming’s work on Penicillin. Florey (an Australian) and Chain (a German) worked together in Oxford through the Second World War to mass produce and refine Penicillin.

They tried unsuccessfully to find a British drugs company to invest so instead found a backer in the USA.

In 1945 the two controversially shared the Nobel Prize with Fleming for their work on Penicillin, leaving out their key researcher, friend and the man who had made the key breakthrough for the mass production Norman Heatley.
