James Marshall

Importance: First person to find Gold.

In January 1848 James Marshall was building a sawmill in California when he noticed a nugget of gold on the riverbed. His find sparked off the first Goldrush. Thousands raced across the Great Plains in search of a fortune that some would find in the rivers of western America. The impact of the Goldrush brought East and West together.
