Joseph Bazalgette
Important in Medicine because…
In the 19th C Joseph Bazalgette was chief inspector to the London Board of Works. He spent his life designing and building London’s vast sewer network and clean water supply. He built sewage pumping houses, dug enormous sewers beneath London. As such he was one of the heroes of 19th C public health alongside Chadwick and Snow.
All this was driven by the state of London at the time 10,000 people died from cholera 1853-54, and in 1858 the Great Stink prevented anyone from going near the River Thames, including politicians sitting in the House of Commons.
