Constructing the Transcontinental Railroad | student work

In the early history of the USA railways were confined to the heavily populated eastern states.  The idea of a Trans Continental Railroad was brought to life in 1866 when the first was begun. The two ends began a race to be joined in the centre of the country, eventually in 1869 at Promontory Point, Utah.

There were many obstacles and difficulties to overcome. Mountains and deserts, ravines and large rivers to cross. There were financial troubles with investors and maintaining progress through difficult terrain. Hostile weather and Indians also proved to be almost insurmountable obstacles.

After many years, the final triumphant achievement of a Trans Continental railroad was completed.  Other railroads and routes followed quickly as companies capitalised on the success.  This greatly increased the movement of people westward. Railroad companies advertised cheap land across the USA and Europe which brought settlers who were desperate to make their fortune.  It also spelled disaster for the Indian whose freedom and land were taken.
