The Plains Indians practiced something called Exposure. This was, if an elderly person male or female was no longer needed or important to the
tribe and could no longer keep up with the tribe, they would be left behind on there own or with other people that couldnt keep up and they would be left to die.

It was seen as normal that Indians practiced exposure as it was part of a custom towards the Souix council and wasnt seen as mean, as it was important that Indians didnt waste time waiting for the elders to catch up with the fit and healthy members of the tribe.
