Medicine Timeline

130AD Birth of Galen. Greek physician and writer of 300+ books. Hugely influential ideas on Medicine for almost 1500 years. In particular took Hippocrates’ idea of the Four Humours and developed and spread it.

1249 Roger Bacon invented eye glasses

1543 Vesalius published his De Fabrica complete with detailed and specific anatomical sketches from dissected human bodies.

1590 Microscope invented by Jannssen.

1628 Harvey published his work on Circulation of the Blood and the Heart.

1796 Jenner creates the first vaccine. Using information about cowpox and smallpox he treats Sarah Nelmes, a cowmaid, and James Phipps, vaccinating him successfully against smallpox. Crucially it works, although he does not know why.

1847 Semmelweiss discovered how to reduce infection in Hospital wards, and how specialist clothing was required to prevent doctors and nurses from spreading infection.

1854 Nightingale went to the Crimea during that war and revolutionised care in Scutari Hospital cutting the death rate from 42% to just 2%.

1861 Pasteur proved his Germ Theory, ending Spontaneous Generation.

1876 Garrett-Andersen becomes the first woman doctor in Britain, inspired by American Elizabeth Blackwell, first American Doctor in 1849.

1879 First modern vaccine, it prevents cholera.

1890 Behring discovered anti-toxins, and developed tetanus and diptheria vaccines.

1895 Roentgen discovered X-rays

1899 Hoffman developed aspirin.

1901 Landsteiner classified blood into groups: A, AB, O and B.

1928 Fleming discovered Penicillin accidentally, but cannot develop it, and leaves it aside. Florey and Chain rediscovered it during World War Two.

1953 Crick and Watson proved the helix-shape structure of human DNA.

1980 Smallpox is eradicated worldwide through UN funding.

1985 Kolff invented first Kidney dialysis machine.
