Renaissance Surgery
Surgery advanced significantly more in the Renaissance than it had previously.
Ambroise Pare made some chance discoveries which greatly improved treatment and operations. When he ran out of oil for treating gunshot wounds he used a compound of eggs, oil of roses and turpentine. This worked, healing was quicker and less painful.
His scientific approach also lead him to use silk ligatures (threads or ties) to seal arteries that were bleeding instead of a hot cautery iron. He also made detailed sketches of new tools. He also designed artificial limbs.
He had made important discoveries, but still had no knowledge of germs, and many doctors ignored his work and carried on using their old methods anyway.
